Ms Cynthia Yu

Soprano Cynthia Yu graduated with a Master of Music in Voice from the renowned Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, under the tutelage of the frequently sought-after mezzo-soprano Tichina Vaughn. She has also studied with different singers who were performing regularly at the MET Opera, including soprano Heidi Grant Murphy, Carol Vaness and Patricia Stiles. Prior to her graduate studies, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Music and she studied singing with Mr. Caleb Woo. Cynthia has given many solo recitals when she was in the States. She also appeared as a soloist in many concerts, for example the soprano solo for Mozart’s Requiem with IU’s University Singers, Pamina from Die Zauberflöte and soprano solo for Saint-Saën’s Christmas Oratorio with Chung Chi Choir HK. She performed as a soprano soloist in Vienna when she was on a music tour with Ying Wa Girls’ School. She premiered the vocal duet piece composed by Professor Victor Chan when she was studying at CUHK.

Having been singing in choirs since 6 years old, Cynthia is fond of choral singing too and she has appeared as a chorus for many renowned choruses. She is recruited as a regular chorus member of the famous Boston Symphony Orchestra. As a member of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus under BSO, Cynthia just performed in Tanglewood, Massachusetts from August 19 to 24 2025, under the baton of the celebrated choral conductor James Burton. They performed works like Poulenc’s Gloria, Holst’s The Planets and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. Cynthia also joined Musica Viva HK as their opera chorus’ member. She was a member of IU University Singers, CUHK Chung Chi Choir and Aqua Voice when she was studying at these two institutions.

Cynthia learned choral conducting from the chair of the choral conducting department and the former Dean of Jacobs School of Music, Professor Gwyn Richards.

Apart from singing, Cynthia also plays the harp and the piano. She studied harp with Ms. Amy Tam and Ms. Amy Huang, the founder of HK Harp Chamber. Cynthia holds a Grade 8 certificate for harp and an ATCL for piano.

Cynthia has 7 years of experience in teaching singing, harp and piano. She also taught music during the two years she’s living in Indiana, USA. She got an A from voice pedagogy class and she specializes in teaching kids music in all instruments she plays. She can speak fluent Cantonese, English, Mandarin, French, German, Italian and Korean. Cynthia lived in the States and Paris prior to graduating and moving back to Hong Kong.
